In the animated series Full Metal Alchemist the main character Edward Elric and his brother Alphonse Elric attempts to resurrect their mother after she had died of an illness through the practice of alchemy. However this attempt fails and consequently due to the alchemic rule of “equivalent exchange”, Edward lost his left leg and Alphonse his entire body. As a matter of desperate measures Edward sacrifices his right arm to bind his brother’s soul to a nearby suit of armor. Because they had touched the forbidden art of human transmutation (alchemy used to bring back the dead or create humans) and failed, they created something else. They created a homunculi, a non-living being that bears the sin of others. In Edward’s case, he created Greed. Later in the story he has several encounters with this homunculi and plenty others that bear the sin of others who attempted human transmutations. Edward wants to atone for his sins, and wants to bring everything back to normal. In his research he finds that by acquiring the Philosopher’s stone, he can perform any human transmutation. He sets his goal to finding the Philosopher’s stone and to use it not to bring back his mother, but to return his brother’s body back to normal and if possible, get his leg and arm back.
